Location: East of Glovertown and west of Clarenville, it lies in the heart of Terra Nova National Park off the Trans Canada Highway.

Historical Overview

Place name origin: Charlottetown was originally called Brown's Cove until the end of the 1800s, possibly named after one of the early settlers. In the late 1800s the name was changed to Charlottetown is recognition of either Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island or in recognition of a Mrs. Charlotte (Hussey) Spracklin, believed to be the first female settler in the area.

Interesting Facts about Charlottetown

  • 1890s, Charlottetown has become one of the main lumbering centers on Bonavista Bay due to its abundant woodlands, and excellent deep water access to Clode Sound.
  • 1891, First census data for the area records 74 inhabitants.
  • 1900s, Charlottetown sends ships to the Labrador fishery.
  • 1911, Charlottetown grows to have a post office, and Methodist and Salvation Army schools.
  • 1921, First Methodist Church is built.
  • 1920, Steam powered boats export local timber and pulp wood to markets.
  • 1935, Population rises to 202.
  • 1957, With the opening of Newfoundland's first National Park, Terra Nova National Park, Charlottetown becomes an enclave within the park's boundaries.
  • 1960s, 70s, 80s, 90s With the opening of Terra Nova National Park, Charlottetown's economy evolves to provide services for the ever increasing visitors to the area.
