Welcome to the Dorset Trail

Explore the Baie Verte Peninsula and it's history!

Return to an ancient time and learn about the early settlers who inhabited our region some 2000 years ago. Visit the Soapstone Quarry at Fleur de Lys and learn first hand how the Dorset Eskimos used soapstone for cooking pots and lamps.

The Baie Verte Peninsula is a "rock hounds" dream. Visit the Baie Verte Miners Museum located at the site of the old Terra Nova copper mine (12km north on Route 410) and learn about our mining history and the geological formations of the region. Then take in the three self-guided Geology Tours (brochures available) which will lead you through most of the region.

No visit to the Dorset Trail is complete without a boat tour. Tours are available from Baie Verte, Nipper's Harbour and La Scie and Fleur-de-Lys. On the water you can see gigantic icebergs as they make their way south, whales, seabirds and seals. Tours from Nipper's Harbour also allow you to visit the now abandoned Betts Cove Mine Site.

For a glimpse of what life was like in a fishing outport, visit the Outport Museum in La Scie. Visit the Queen of Swansea Monument located in Tilt Cove and learn about one of our most horrific maritime disasters; the wreck of the Queen of Swansea on Gull Island in 1867.

There are many walking and hiking trails along the Baie Verte Peninsula. Hike to the Goldenville Mine Site, site of what was once the first gold mine in Newfoundland. Picnic, or even handglide from Bond's Lookout (1km from Seal Cove on Route 412) which will afford you a fantastic view of Seal Cove, the surrounding hillside and ocean. Fish for Atlantic salmon off of the Salmon Trail near Burlington or the Rock Climb at Woodstock. And if you just enjoy our coastal delights, the Burnt Point walking bridge in Wild Cove, Pacquet Walking Trail (Pacquet), Lighthouse Trail (Westport), Cow Cove Trail (Coachman's Cove), Middle Arm Hiking & Fishing Trail (Middle Arm), Blagdon Walking Trail (Baie Verte), the Limestone Park (Smith's Harbour) and the four hiking trails of Fleur-de-Lys will provide you with a memorable hiking experience.

For those visiting during the winter you can "Ski to the Sea!" at Copper Creek Mountain, spend a day cross country skiing at Spruce Trails or snowmobile on hundreds of kilometres of groomed trails.

There is always something to do along the Dorset Trail.
