Fogo Island Central (pop. 21) is a relatively new community with on-going development. The first building erected was the Fogo Island Motel (1965). The first permanent residents were a family from Lewisporte who built their home on land known as "Doctors Farm" (1966). Fogo Island Central began a gradual expansion process and is becoming a prosperous business center.
Before 1972 each community had a school for each denomination. But the people of Fogo Island came together to form 2 interdenominational schools centrally located to serve the entire island. Fogo Island Central High, grades 7 to 12 (1972) and Venture Academy, grades K to 6 (1987).
