Seldom & Little Seldom

Scenic
Seldom & Little Seldom located in the Kittiwake Coast Newfoundland

Seldom (pop. 518) developed its earliest name of Seldom Go-By (which was the original name on "Sir Charles Hamilton's Map") from the difficulty schooners had in navigating to the south of Fogo Island. The name Seldom Come-By was given to the community because it seldom happened for a schooner to go bye without coming in. Therefore the name Seldom Go-By was changed to Seldom Come-By.

Seldom is very well known for the Burnt Point Light House built in 1905 and operated manually until 1992. Seldom is the main center for the Fogo Island Co-operative Society Limited which was formed in 1967. Their facilities include:

    • Main Office Building
    • Welding Shop
    • Stockroom
    • Fuel Pumps
    • Fish Processing Plant/Wharf/Ice House

The harbour's depth in Seldom allows ships to enter without difficulty. It is often a safe haven for ships "riding out" stormy seas. Seldom also offers the following tourist attractions and services:

    • Marine Service Centre
    • 2 Churches
    • Hiking trail to Wild Cove
    • Post Office
    • Seldom Town Council Office
    • Fogo Island Marine Information Centre
    • Wesley United Church Museum
