Origin of Name: Two theories, Some believe that it was probably named for Moreton, a village in Dorset England. Another theory suggests that it was named after two early missionary brothers, John and Julien Moreton.

Early Settlement: First European settlers arrived in the early 1800s attracted by the fine harbour, proximity to the inshore fishery, and excellent local timberlands.

- 1810, According to local tradition , the first European settlers in the area are the Small family, shortly followed by the Taylors.
- 1836(ca), Methodist Church is built.
- 1874, Moreton's Harbour, becoming more active in the Labrador fishery, sends nine schooners to fish off Labrador.
- 1876, Antimony (an element used in metals) is discovered, heralding a beginning of a short lived mining industry.
- 1883-1888, Moreton's Harbour shipbuilding industry produces 16 ships. One of the more prominent builders is Mark Osmond.
- 1886, Albert Hatcher is born in Moreton's Harbour. In 1933 he becomes President of Memorial College, and in 1949 overseas Memorial accreditation as a university.
- 1891, Community's population reaches 500.
- 1891, Salvation Army establishes itself in the community.
- 1902-1904, Famed Newfoundland poet E.J. Pratt teaches at Moreton's Harbour school.
- 1907, Clarence Dexter Wisemen is born in Moreton's Harbour. From 1974-1977 he is the General of the International Salvation Army.
- 1921, Moreton's Harbour becomes a center for the merchant economy as six mercantile houses are in operation.
