Rencontre East

Scenic Milltown located in the Coast of Bays Newfoundland

Nestled in a quiet corner of Fortune Bay, on Newfoundland's South Coast is the isolated community of Rencontre East. Access to the community is by sea or air (helicopter) only. From central Newfoundland you take the Bay D'Espoir Highway (Route 360), take a left on Pool's Cove Road (Route 362) to Pool's Cove and hop on the Passenger Ferry. From the Eastern Newfoundland travel down to the Burin Peninsula Highway (Route 210) and take the exit to a town called Bay L'Argent (Route 212) where you will see the sign for Rencontre East Ferry. Please note that vehicles are not permitted on ferry. However, vehicles may remain near the ferry dock at the owner's risk.

Settled as early as 1836 the main source of income was that of in-shore cod and herring fishing. Rencontre (French for "meeting place") East was a shelter for the French fishermen during the days and nights when the seas were rough. Today, the cod fishery has almost become a thing of the past. However, despite the drastic changes in the economy, the two hundred and twelve residents of Rencontre East maintain the existence of the community through spirit and persistence.

Mountains of various sizes envelope the community, creating a wide range of interests. "Daniel's Hill" is approximately 300 feet high, whereas "Arial" has an elevation of 1100 feet - a breathtaking beauty! There are many trails that can be hiked, as well. Why not take a stroll to "Lou Point", an abandoned ghost town where all that remains are fragments of hundred year old houses. Rencontre Lake, or better known as "The Pond" to residents, is a short jaunt outside of the community. It is a magnificent and glorious camping ground surrounded by four miles of deep, fresh water and high, rolling mountains. Rich and bountiful in fish, berries and wildlife, Rencontre Lake is host to yearly visitors.
