Location: The first community when entering the Eastport Peninsula on Route 310 (central Bonavista Bay).

Historical Overview

Place Name Origin: The community was named after Queen Elizabeth II's summer home - Sandringham Parish and Royal Mansion. This mansion has been in the royal family for generations.

Names and Dates of First Settlers:

  • First settler was a man named Harold White.
  • In 1939 the majority of the original settlers came from Salvage, the Flat Islands, Eastport, and Happy Adventure.
  • Some of those family names included Balsam, Brown, Hapgood, Harvey, Samson, and Williams.

First Recorded Population:

  • First appeared in the Census in 1945 with a population of 132.

Major Early Industries: Fishing, farming

Significant Facts about Sandringham

  • Sandringham was founded in 1939 as part of a government land settlement movement to establish farming communities. The original plan was to settle 50 families at the site, but when World War II began it was decided to settle only half that number.
