St. Joseph's Cove is on the West side of Bay d'Espoir. It is located approximately halfway between St.Alban's and Milltown/Head of Bay d'Espoir. The town is built around a large, shallow cove.
The community's original name was Cock and Hen Cove, so named in the 1800s, as the cove was often frequented by fishermen digging cocks and hens (clams) for bait. It was also the site of the winter homes of families involved in the winter logging industry. The first permanent settlers in the community were a family named Organ who moved there in 1880.
In 1901, the area had a population of 26. In the early twentieth century, sawmills were built in nearby communities, attracting more settlers. These included settlers with the family names McDonald and Leroux. These early settlers supported themselves primarily by logging and supplemented this by fishing and farming. In the 1960s most of the inhabitants were involved in the construction of the hydro-electric facility and or the highways. These industries drew people to the community and, by 1966, the population had grown to a record high of 298. At the completion of these projects the population of the area decline to 122 in 1991 and has since decreased even further. Currently most of the community's inhabitants work outside the community.
