Location: Near the west boundary of Terra Nova National Park (Route 310)

Historical Overview

Place Name Origin: Formerly known as Troy Town. A geologist by the name of J.B Jukes engaged in some speculation as to where the name came from. The only information he came up with was that there was a village near Dorchester called Troy Town. The town had a famous maze cut into the turf and the name became a west-country expression meaning "a scene of disorder or confusion".

Names and Dates of First Settlers:

  • First permanently settled in the 1880s.
  • Settled because of a sawmill established by Mr. McCalm.
  • Some of the oldest family names in Traytown are Arnold, Denty, Ralph, Roach, and Whelan.

First Recorded Populations:

  • 1884 - 9
  • 1901 - 81
  • 1911 - 127

Major Early Industries: Logging, sawmilling, fishing
